How to understand call numbers:
the Library of Congress Classification System

(modified from the original version and used by permission of Matt Rosenberg, Geography Guide at The Mining Co.)

NOTE: These local pages may not be as current as the original ones.

The Library of Congress Classification System organizes material in libraries according to twenty-one branches of knowledge (listed below).

The 21 categories (labeled A to Z, but missing I, O, W, X and Y) are further divided by adding one or two additional letters and a set of numbers. This system is in use at the Library of Congress and at many academic and research libraries in Canada and the United States. Sources for this data include the LC Classification Outline. Sixth Edition. Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1990. (Call number: Z 696.U42.1990) and the in-depth outlines at the beginning of Library of Congress Classification Schedules.

NOTE: if your browser does not support tables, please use the abridged version (no tables).
